Traditional artisans and craftspeople across India can receive financial, training and business support under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana. The government scheme is aimed at helping people engaged in traditional occupations improve their skills, upgrade their tools and get better access to credit and markets.

Launched in September 2023, the PM Vishwakarma scheme covers 18 traditional trades, including carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, tailors, barbers, goldsmiths and footwear artisans. The scheme focuses on supporting workers who depend on traditional skills and tools for their livelihood.

Who Can Apply for PM Vishwakarma Yojana?

The scheme is primarily meant for self-employed artisans and craftspeople working in one of the specified trades. Applicants must generally be at least 18 years old and actively engaged in the relevant occupation.

The 18 trades covered under PM Vishwakarma include carpenter, boat maker, armourer, blacksmith, hammer and tool kit maker, locksmith, goldsmith, potter, sculptor or stone breaker, cobbler and footwear artisan, mason, basket/mat/broom maker, doll and toy maker, barber, garland maker, washerman, tailor and fishing net maker.

Only one member of a family can generally register under the scheme. Applicants also need to meet the other eligibility and verification conditions prescribed by the government.

PM Vishwakarma Yojana Benefits

One of the major benefits of the scheme is skill training. Eligible beneficiaries can receive basic and advanced training to improve their traditional skills. A training stipend is also provided according to the applicable scheme provisions.

The scheme also provides a toolkit incentive of up to ₹15,000 through e-vouchers. This assistance is intended to help artisans purchase or upgrade tools required for their work.

Another important benefit is collateral-free credit support. Eligible beneficiaries can get a first loan of up to ₹1 lakh. After successful repayment and subject to the scheme’s conditions, they may become eligible for a second loan of up to ₹2 lakh. The loans are offered with government-supported interest concessions under the scheme.

Beneficiaries can also receive incentives for eligible digital transactions. Marketing support is another part of the programme, helping artisans improve the visibility and market reach of their products.

How to Register for PM Vishwakarma Yojana?

Eligible artisans can register through the designated process with assistance from Common Service Centers (CSCs). Applicants need to provide the required information and complete the verification process.

Registration alone does not guarantee benefits. Applications are checked against the scheme’s eligibility criteria before benefits are approved.

Why the Scheme Matters

Traditional artisans often face challenges such as limited access to modern equipment, formal credit and wider markets. PM Vishwakarma Yojana aims to address these issues by combining skill development, toolkit assistance, affordable credit, digital incentives and marketing support.

For eligible artisans, the scheme can provide an opportunity to strengthen their traditional businesses while adapting to changing market needs.
